Here is Teresa donating £50 to Andrew Clifton for Testicular cancer uk on our sponsored twirl day – a charity very close to our Leaders heart. Testicular cancer | Charity

Although the troupe get some of our photos and videos from members family or committee the majority come from Andrew Clifton and his brother. Here is what Andre has to say:

“Me and my brother Stephen Clifton, have been filming and taking photos of Hastings Carnival and The Hastings Coastal Twirlers, play a major part in the procession over the years we have seen the girls grow up through the ranks, the girls are always on top form, their outfits always look, amazing and in recent years I have a the pleasure of meeting Teresa Briggs one the troupe’s leaders and she has informed me that she was 15 when she first started, with Hastings Coastal Twirlers, back in the 1980s, it’s great to see that she’s still with them and hopefully getting a new generation of girls and boy’s interested. Let’s hope we can enjoy their performance for many years to come.”

“…Since starting HCT it has been my baby, it has been through rocky times but always come out the other side stronger. I love the HCT family, I have trained over 7,000 girls and boys, well that was the count about 5 yrs ago so add more to that total. Now I have the grandchildren of girls I have trained…”

“…On the 12th January 1984, Teresa came and said she wanted to start her own troupe, both of us said go ahead, we will help you as much as we can. At 15yrs old she started Hastings Coastal Twirlers. With 12 girls she started training, their first carnival was Hastings Town Carnival which they came 1st in their category. That was the first of many successes. She took them on the exchange trips to Germany for several years, also to Chelsea Pension Hospital to entertain the pensioners. Teresa still teachers and performs with her troupe, Both of us have had to retire from the troupe but still help in the background…”

“…I’ve been twirling since I was 9 and I joined HCT as Assistant Coach/Trainer in 2009. It was the best decision. I love teaching and seeing individuals achieve and grow their own abilities. HCT is a very supportive troupe to all different individuals needs…”

“…I started off as part of HCT as a flag boy when I was 6 I’ve gone on to be part of the committee, helping set up the music systems for displays, setting up the trucks for carnivals to. My son is in the majorettes and has recently become the current flag boy. Both my daughters where also part of
the twirlers to. I’m so proud be able to support my mum through everything she does with the troupe and to watch my children perform with her to…”

“…I joined HCT when I was 8 years old and was a twirler until my mid 30’s (minus a couple of years in my 20’s). My daughter joined when she was 7 and I became a volunteer. Lockdown was particularly hard for all and my daughter ended up leaving for a brief period, but has returned and enjoys it so
much. The troupe is supportive and inclusive to all. Although due to my own health I am not as active a volunteer as I once was but I still do my bit in the back ground to support both Teresa and the troupe. This is more than a community group, it is a Majorette family and I am proud to be a part of it as is my daughter. Long may this troupe remain…”

“…Both my girls joined during the first part of 2024. One day while waiting to pick them up, I offered to help and I’ve loved being part of the troupe and watching them all shine when they perform. I smile as they are all amazing. It’s like having an extended family. I really love being involved with HCT…”

“…When I was younger, I was a part of HCT and loved it. When my girls said they wanted to do
majorettes there was only one place I wanted them to go. At HCT, they are like your 2nd family,
always there to help if you are struggling with anything. Teresa is an amazing leader and my girls love it as much as I did…”

“…We are both parents of Jodie who has been part of the troupe for 17 years now and she still loves it just as much as when she first started. We help with all carnivals walking along side the girls to keep everyone safe and carry collection buckets when needed. The laughs and giggles from all the girls just make the atmosphere enjoyable and we love helping where ever we can.…”

“…Hastings coastal twirlers is a fantastic inclusive fun place, it has taught me great transferable skills including, but not limited to teamwork, resilience, commitment and problem solving. These all have helped me be a better person and it’s all due to being part of this troupe, every week i walk into a warm loving place where I have fun, with friends, that no doubt will be for life, we can work off of each other to help each other improve and give each other feedback or get help from our trainers, which I think is one of the things that makes this unique, the relationships you make with everyone and the enjoyment you get from knowing that you as a team can create something so amazing at the end of a year to give to the community…”

“…I was part of HCT for 7 wonderful years and in that time I gained lots of wonderful memories and made lots of lovely friends. My mum and nan used to come to training with me every week. They very much enjoyed running the tuck shop. My most favourite memory was travelling to London where me and Kayleigh performed our winning routine to eye of the tiger infront of the Chelsea pensioners. It is a very memorable moment. Thank you for giving me that opportunity.…”

“…From the age of seven to fifteen, being a majorette was one of the most joyful and defining parts of my childhood. It wasn’t just about the routines, the uniforms, or the performances—it was about the feeling of belonging to something special. Every practice, every parade, and every shared laugh built a world that I looked forward to being part of week after week. What made it truly unforgettable were the friendships I formed along the way. We grew up together in many ways, supporting each other through nerves before performances and celebrating each other’s successes afterwards. Those friendships were filled with fun, mischief, and a strong sense of teamwork that made every moment richer. Out of all the memories, one stands out above the rest. Performing for the Chelsea Pensioners was my greatest and most meaningful moment as a majorette. It felt like such an honour to be part of something that brought joy to others, and there was a real sense of pride in that performance. Afterwards, sharing laughs and enjoying what felt like an endless supply of chocolate éclairs made the day even more special. It was simple, sweet, and full of happiness—the kind of moment you wish you could bottle up forever. Looking back, that time in my life was filled with energy, friendship, and unforgettable experiences. Being a majorette wasn’t just an activity—it was a chapter of life that shaped me and left me with memories I’ll always treasure.  I’ll end with a huge appreciation thanks to Teresa, Pat and Den x…”

“…Hastings Coastal Twirlers was such a special part of my childhood. It gave me an outlet to express myself, build confidence, and create memories I’ll treasure forever. I was lucky to be surrounded by the most supportive troop! It’s an experience I will cherish for a lifetime and that’s something I’ll be forever grateful for…”

“…I joined HCT when I was just 8, little did I know I would end up being part of the troupe for the next 18 years. I gained so much confidence and formed so many friendships over that time.
